The Age Factor at Hyper Island
Linkedin Interview-style Article Series
Concept, Writing & Editorial Direction
Concept & Background
The Age Factor is a self-initiated editorial article series exploring the experiences of 40+ students at Hyper Island LinkedIn article series spotlighting 40+ mature students at Hyper Island. Inspired by my own return to education at 47, the project grew from a curiosity about what draws people back to learning later in life, how they navigate the experience, and what perspectives they bring to education and industry.
Results
The articles reached an average of approximately 4,500 views each, with a follower base of around 900 at the time. Engagement was particularly strong on the first article, generating thoughtful comments, reposts, and recognition from John Mellkvist, a well-known Swedish voice on ageism and working life.
Beyond metrics, the project sparked meaningful direct messages from those who were considering returning to education, and mature students who recognised themselves in the stories and expressed appreciation for having their experiences reflected and shared.
Reflection
I chose an interview-based, written format to centre people’s voices in their own words. I’m drawn to this approach because it allows for nuance, lived experience, and individuality. I feel that these qualities are increasingly important in an age of automation and AI-generated content. This project reinforced my belief in the value of thoughtful, human-centred storytelling as a way to build understanding and visibility.
